Your support team resolves tickets all day. Are customers happy? Frustrated? You have no idea because you’re not asking.
Customer satisfaction (CSAT) surveys are supposed to solve this. In practice, they get ignored. Most support tools send a generic “How did we do?” email after every ticket closes, with a 5-question form that takes three minutes to complete. Developers don’t fill those out.
But CSAT data is valuable. A score of 1 on a bug report tells you something went very wrong. A score of 5 with a comment like “Fixed in 10 minutes, great work” tells you your team nailed it. Aggregate scores reveal trends: are response times slipping? Is a specific category (billing, API issues) consistently negative?
The question is how to collect this feedback without annoying your customers into silence.
Why traditional CSAT surveys fail with developers
Developer customers have specific annoyances:
Surveys arrive too early. Many tools send the survey immediately when a ticket closes. But “closed” doesn’t always mean “resolved.” If the developer hasn’t had time to verify the fix or deploy the change, they can’t accurately rate their experience yet.
Too many questions. “Rate your experience. Would you recommend us? How satisfied are you with the response time? How satisfied are you with the solution quality?” Developers have five other tabs open and a build that just failed. They close the email.
No context in the email. “How would you rate your recent support experience?” Which support experience? Developers interact with multiple vendors. If your survey email doesn’t include the ticket subject or a summary, they have to dig through their inbox to remember what you’re even asking about.
Forced comments. Some surveys require a text explanation for low scores. Developers are willing to click a button, but writing a paragraph? That’s work. If the rating is mandatory but the ticket was fine, they skip the whole survey.
Survey fatigue. If your team closes 20 tickets a month for the same customer, sending 20 surveys is noise. The customer stops opening them.
What works: the one-click survey
The best CSAT surveys for developers are stupid simple:
- One question: “How was your experience?”
- One click to answer: a row of star or emoji buttons in the email itself
- Optional comment field (not required)
- Context included: ticket subject and a one-line summary
That’s it. No multi-page form. No “Please tell us more.” No “On a scale of 1-10, how likely…” Just stars.
Here’s what a good survey email looks like:

Clicking a rating records the score. If the customer wants to add context, they can, but it is optional. Most of the time, the click is enough.
Timing matters
Send the survey after a delay, not immediately. A good default is 1 hour after ticket close. This gives your team time to reopen the ticket if the issue was not actually resolved, and it gives the customer time to verify that the fix works.
For some ticket types, you might want a longer delay:
- Bug fixes: 24 hours (so the customer can deploy and verify)
- Feature requests: Skip the survey (there is no resolution to rate yet)
- Billing questions: 1 hour (resolution is immediate)
Let your team skip surveys on a per-ticket basis. Not every closed ticket should generate a survey. Internal test tickets, duplicates, spam, and tickets where the customer never responded should not trigger surveys. A /csat skip command on the ticket prevents the survey from being sent.
What to measure
Track these metrics over time:
Response rate: What percentage of surveys get answered? A good rate for developer customers is 40-60%. Below 30% means your survey is too long, too frequent, or arrives at the wrong time.
Average rating: The mean score across all responses. Track this monthly. If it drops, something changed—investigate whether response times slipped, a specific category of ticket is consistently negative, or a recent product change caused frustration.
Distribution: How many 5-star vs 1-star ratings? A healthy distribution has a strong peak at 4-5 stars with a small tail at 1-2. If you see a bimodal distribution (lots of 5s and lots of 1s, few 3s), you have consistency issues: some tickets are handled well, others poorly.
Comments: Read every comment, especially on low scores. These tell you what broke. “Took 3 days to get a response” means SLA tracking failed. “Still not working” means the ticket was closed prematurely. “The workaround is annoying” means you need to prioritize a proper fix.

What to do with the data
Collecting CSAT scores is easy. Using them to improve is harder. Here is what works:
1. Review low scores immediately
Set up a GitHub Action or Slack notification that pings your team when a 1- or 2-star rating comes in. Treat it like a P1 bug. Find out what went wrong. Did the solution not work? Was the response time too slow? Was the tone off?
Often, a low score means the ticket was closed prematurely. Follow up with the customer to make it right.
2. Track scores by category
If you use AI triage to label tickets by category (bug, billing, feature request, API question), break down CSAT scores by label. You might find that billing tickets consistently score 4.8, but API troubleshooting tickets average 3.2. That tells you where to invest in better docs, tooling, or training.
3. Report monthly trends to the team
Generate a monthly report with:
- Average CSAT score
- Response rate
- Rating distribution
- Sample comments from 5-star and 1-star tickets
Share it in your team standup or retro. Celebrate wins (“We hit 4.7 this month, highest ever!”) and discuss patterns in the low scores.
4. Use comments to prioritize docs
Comments on low-scoring tickets often reveal gaps in your documentation. “I couldn’t figure out how to configure webhooks” → write a webhook guide. “The error message was confusing” → improve the error message in the next release.
Track these patterns. After three customers mention the same confusion, that is a documentation or UX issue, not a support problem.
5. Do not obsess over the number
A CSAT score of 4.5 is great. A score of 4.6 isn’t meaningfully better. Don’t spend weeks optimizing for a 0.1 increase. Focus on the distribution and the comments. A score of 4.0 with tight clustering at 4-5 is healthier than a score of 4.5 with a wide spread from 1-5 (the latter means inconsistent quality).
Common mistakes
Surveying too often. If the same customer receives 5 surveys in a week, they stop responding. Consider batching: one survey per customer per month, regardless of how many tickets they opened.
Requiring comments on low scores. “You rated us 2 stars. Please tell us why.” This turns a low score into work. Just accept the score and follow up manually if needed.
Ignoring high scores. CSAT is not just about fixing problems. Read the 5-star comments too. They tell you what your team is doing right. Share those wins.
No action on the data. If you collect CSAT scores but never discuss them, never follow up on low scores, and never use the feedback to improve, stop collecting them. You are just annoying customers for metrics you do not use.
When to skip surveys entirely
Some teams should not run CSAT surveys:
- Very low ticket volume (fewer than 10 tickets/month). The data is too noisy to be useful.
- Internal support teams where the “customers” are coworkers. Satisfaction is measured differently.
- Open-source projects with free community support. Surveying volunteers who help for free feels off.
If you do run surveys, commit to using the data. Otherwise, you are just adding email noise.
